The Rooster crossed the river on the same raft as the Goat and Monkey — but it was not idle during the journey. While the Monkey steered and the Goat kept calm, it was the Rooster who had first spotted the raft from a distance, cried out to the others, and rallied the team. Without the Rooster's sharp eyes, there would have been no raft, no crossing, no tenth place. The Jade Emperor recognized this, awarding the Rooster its position with a nod to its observance and its voice. The Rooster calls the hour — it has always been the one that sees the dawn coming first.
