The Buffalo was the most powerful swimmer of all the animals, and it was generous enough to carry both the Rat and the Cat across the wide river. It plunged in confidently, certain of victory. But as the far bank approached, it felt a sudden lightness — the Rat had pushed the Cat overboard and leapt forward off its head. By the time the Buffalo's massive hooves hit the earth, the Rat had already crossed the finish line. The Buffalo arrived second, cheated out of first by the very creature it had helped. It accepted this with characteristic patience, and to this day the Buffalo earns its place not through cunning but through unmatched reliability.
