Legend Has It

The Cat and the Rat had been close friends before the Great Race, and together they planned to cross the river on the Buffalo's broad back. But the Rat — always thinking several moves ahead — pushed the Cat into the raging current as they neared the shore. The Cat, a poor swimmer, was swept away. It never made it across. It never received a place in the zodiac. Some say this is why the Cat is not one of the twelve — and why, to this very day, cats hunt rats with ancient, unhurried fury. The Cat's exclusion from the zodiac is one of the great injustices of the heavens, and those born under its sign carry within them a grace that was never properly honored.
